The system that was causing me these problems is a Windows XP machine with Firefox 2.0.0.3. I don't know what version of Java. I just tried it on my desktop machine, a 6 month old Windows XP setup. Installing Java there (it was not installed when I went to play) caused the browser to lock up. But once I restarted Firefox, it worked just fine (I could surf while the game was downloading). We all use firefox and we've never seen anything like what you describe here -- what platform are you using? Browser windows locking up is very weird indeed.
