GDC 07: I’ll be there
I purchased my pass for this year’s Game Developer’s Conference, being held in San Francisco March 5-9. If you purchase tickets before the end of January, you get a substantial discount. And if you can’t afford a pass, you can probably volunteer and get a free Giga pass (they’ve done that previous years). Check their website for details.
I find the GDC a real creative energizer for me, and I look forward to it every year. If you read my blog and you’ll be going to GDC, drop me a line. I’m always looking to meet up with fellow gamers (indie or otherwise) and old friends. Hope to see you there.

Even just the Expo pass is worth it, if you don’t have to travel too far. Lots of interesting stuff to see and people to meet.

I’m so glad it’s back in SF again this year!
Since you’re into Kongregate, you might want to know that I’ll be doing two sessions at GDC both at the Casual Game Summit:

So You Want To Start a Casual Game Company—Lee Crawford (TwoFish); Juan Gril (JoJu Games); Nick Fortugno (Gamelab); Daniel Bernstein (Sandlot Games); James Gwertzman (PopCap); Jim Greer (Kongregate)
and
Post Mortems: Game, Franchise & Company
Heidi Perry (PlayFirst) talks about ways to leverage existing casual game intellectual property to turn a hit title into a hit franchise, as well as the overlooked importance of marketing for casual games. Lee Crawford (Twofish) speaks about raising venture money to start a casual game company in late 2006. Jim Greer (Kongregate) speaks about a user-generated casual games site as well as fund raising.

The expo pass is worth it if you’ve got someone to meet up with. If you’re completely new to the game dev scene and haven’t pre-arranged to meet up with anyone or found any meet-n-greets or gatherings before you go, you may find yourself with a lot of “alone” time, and the expo can only provide so much entertainment for that.
There was one year I didn’t buy ANY pass and just hung outside the hallway and looked for old coworkers. It was still a blast!

I’ll be there! Well, kinda. Probably just the meet-n-greets & afterparties, like last year. I had a great time meeting everyone last year, looking forward to more of the same.
