New Director in 2007 confirmed on adobe.com

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

Adobe released an updated FAQ for Director, including confirmation that the new version of Director will be released in 2007:

When is the next version of Director software expected to be released?

Adobe has not published an official time frame for the next release of Director and generally does not disclose details of new releases more than 30 days before a product is expected to ship. However, our current planning assumption is that the next major release of Director will be in the first half of 2007.

What features are included in the next version of Director?

Adobe has not yet disclosed a feature list for the next version of Director. We will gather input from the Director user community as we explore opportunities for features to include in the next version.

What are Adobe’s long-term plans for Director?

Director is a market-leading product with a loyal and substantial user base. Adobe will continue to invest in Director and develop new releases targeting current and future innovations in multimedia development. Future versions will be rebranded as “Adobe Director.”

Director: Better, faster great-looking image resampling

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

A few months ago I was posted about how Director’s scaling code looks great when shrinking something more than 50%, but for shrinking stuff less than 50%, the image gets jaggy.

My solution at the time was to use some bilinear resampling code written for Lingo, which I modified from an existing function written by Josh Chunick. It worked like a charm, but it was pretty slow. Good for an occasional resample, but too slow to use in, say, a game. Read the rest of this entry

Director Logo Great news!

Thomas Higgins dropped a short comment today on the Lingo-L Mailing list:

What I can offer is the same information we were sharing at the Casuality game conference last week: next major release of Director in the first part of 2007. I cannot get more specific on dates nor can I provide specifics on features just yet, sorry.

Well that’s farther off than I wanted, but this confirms other reports I’ve heard that Director is getting more attention now that it’s under’s Adobe care than it was when it was at Macromedia (recently, anyway).

Check out my other Macromedia Director posts here (I won’t start calling it Adobe Director until Adobe’s on site does).
